About the SPIN-A-TALE

LEGAL VIEWS is conducting a pan-India Short Story Writing Competition called Spin-A-Tale wherein the participants will have to weave a short story starting with the prompts provided and using the keywords mentioned within 700 words.

Spin-A-Tale is a short story writing competition which aims to test the participant’s creative ability and story-building skills, meanwhile utilizing in the best possible manner the keywords provided. The competition is open to everyone.

Out of the two given story head starts, participants are required to choose ANY ONE.

PROMPT 1

Behind a large desk sat a small man whose large head was decorated with a fine crop of carefully groomed curly white hair; the face was either tanned or olive-skinned, lean with high cheekbones and surprisingly smooth, as if the youthfulness which has deserted his hair had found permanent accommodation around the aquiline nose and full sensuous mouth; his brown eyes were large, slightly protruding, and seemed filled with a kind of wonder, as if he were on the verge of some new and exciting discovery.

PROMPT 2

From the headmaster’s office a short flight of stairs led down to a narrow corridor between the auditorium on one side and some classrooms on the other. I paused for a moment outside the first of these classrooms, not sure where to begin, when the door was pushed violently outwards and a tall red-headed girl rushed out into the corridor closely pursued by two others. In such a narrow space I was quite unable to dodge her wild progress, so I quickly grabbed her by the arms to avoid being bowled over and to steady her. Quickly recovering herself she shook loose, smiled impudently in my face, and with a quick “Sorry” raced down the corridor and out of sight. Her companions pulled up hastily, stopped a moment to look at me, then quickly re-entered the classroom, letting the door bang loudly shut behind them.

EVALUATION / JUDGING CRITERIA

The entries sticking to the format required will be evaluated on the basis of the following judging criteria:

• Creativity

• Structure & Narrative

• Adherence to prompts and keywords

• Originality

• Grammar

RULES OF ENTRY AND FORMATTING DETAILS

1. Font style should be TIMES NEW ROMAN.

2. Font size should be 14.

3. Participants must submit their work in PDF format.

4. Work may be on any subject and in any form but should not have been previously published. Any plagiarized work will be disqualified along with any other work submitted by the entrant. All entries must be original works by the entrant, in English.

5. No competitor may win more than one prize.

6. Participants must not mention their name in the PDF file. They should only mention their names in the body of the email along with the subject “Spin a tale”. PDF files attached must be sent on spinaatale@gmail.com . Nothing must appear on any page of the PDF which would identify the author.

7. The name of the PDF file should be the code (e.g. NAD-43), which the participants will be provided with after successfully completing the registration, i.e. after the payment of the registration fees.

8. The submission should not in any case exceed the word limit of 700 words.

9. The title of the story must appear at the top of each page.

10. Only one entry is allowed per person. Maximum number of co-authors allowed is two (1 author and 1 co-author only).

11. Stories cannot be altered once submitted.

12. Only the entries for which the payment is received will be considered.

13. The decisions of the judges are entirely their own and are final and binding.

• Charges for Sole author are 100 INR and for Co-authors are 150 INR.

• The payment details will be provided to you once you register using the registration form.

• It has to be paid before the submission of your entry.

• E-certificate for Participation will be provided to all the participants.
